An old back boiler fire once sat in the builder’s opening of this brick chimney. After its removal, the customer saw the potential in the old rustic brick chimney, and the large builders opening. Ideal, in fact, for a woodburning stove. The one caveat to the project was the lintel. The customer didn’t like the harsh look to the beam across the chimney, but we cannot remove it without affecting the integrity of the structure. Our task was to freshen up and clad the chimney to create a classic fire centrepiece.
The project starts with the hidden work. To create the brick effect we used brick-slip tiles. Firstly, we used fireboard inside the builders opening to protect against the heat from the stove, and plasterboard for the outside of the chimney. This provides a great working surface for the brick-slip tiles. Second, we were to fit Yorkshire stone to create a rustic hearth. The customer wanted a particular pattern using the Yorkshire stone, so we created a 5 piece stone hearth to run in line with the edge of the chimney breast.
