Small is beautiful. In fact, small is amazing in this case.
It is so satisfying when you transform a space in your home into one of high form and function; such as a built in wardrobe, or a space-saving office area. What interior installation would be more appealing use of floor space in a bedroom other than to create an ensuite? Well, that is precisely the thoughts of this homeowner, and what a fantastic idea it was.
Think smart to create an ensuite
Let’s be honest here, there is very little room to work with, so we had to think and work smart. It is pointless putting in bathroom furniture if you cannot use it. We also need to provide space to stand, to use the toilet and sink comfortably, and access the shower with ease and safety. Thankfully, there are bathroom furniture manufacturers that supply compact ranges that are practical and desirable.
Key to this project is the position of the door. To maximise the floor space for standing the door has to open out, because it would not be possible to open or close the door comfortably from inside the ensuite. The door frame must allow for the width of the shower tray, whilst the opposite side must leave enough space to accommodate a sink and toilet, plus the space to use it comfortably.
The customer knew they would have to compromise
Of course, there are limitations with the space we have to work with, but we met the important aspects of usability with the choice of furniture and layout. We used the largest possible shower tray for the space which we raised to hide all the plumbing components. The shower door slides across rather than opening in or out to make life easier in this small room. We boxed in the waste pipe from the shower to the toilet neatly along the floor on the back wall. This waste feeds into the toilet waste. Because of the position of the room in relation to the properties waste and soil pipes, we installed a macerator (learn more about macerators here). These turn solids from a toilet into liquid using high speed rotational blades and then pump the waste liquid through much smaller pipes.
We always spec our bathrooms as if we owned them. Even though small, the stylish tiles, bathroom suite and towel radiator make for perfect upgrade to a bedroom. If you’d like to create an ensuite and live in Leeds, please get in touch.
